Root Canal Treatment

Root canals are a type of treatment used to save a tooth from severe decay before it becomes necessary for extraction. It is required once a tooth’s soft tissues—also known as its pulp—becomes infected or inflamed. A root canal treatment involves removing the infected pulp from the tooth and thoroughly cleaning and sealing the area to prevent further infection.

Pulp Infection

A tooth’s pulp—which consists of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues—may become infected if decay reaches far into the tooth, beyond the outer enamel layer. Left untreated, the decay may cause the tooth to eventually become so infected that it is beyond repair. At this point, tooth extraction is needed to remove the tooth and infection to prevent it from spreading and to reduce discomfort.
