A complete denture is an appliance that replaces natural teeth and provides support for the cheeks and lips. Most dentures are made of acrylic and can be fabricated two different ways:
- Conventional denture – Conventional dentures are created after all teeth have been extracted and the gums have healed.
- Immediate dentures – Immediate dentures are fabricated and inserted immediately after all remaining teeth are extracted.
Removable Partial Dentures
Removable partial dentures are designed specifically to meet the needs of the patient and can replace one or more missing teeth. Partial dentures are created out of a metal and acrylic composition or completely out of acrylic. A patient’s specific needs and anatomy dictate the design of the partial denture.
Over a normal course of time, dentures will wear and need to be replaced or relined to reestablish a secure fit. The alignment will slowly change as the bone and gums recede or shrink due to the extraction of teeth. Regular dental examinations are important for the denture wearer so that the oral tissues can be checked for disease or changes.
