A professional teeth cleaning—also known as dental prophylaxis—is a preventative treatment performed to thoroughly clean the teeth and gums. This treatment helps keep the oral cavity in good health and can stop the advancement of tooth decay, gingivitis, and other periodontal (gum) diseases.
Benefits of Teeth Cleaning
- Tartar (calculus) and plaque buildup above and below the gum line can lead to serious periodontal problems; a professional dental cleaning will remove the buildup.
- Bad breath—also known as halitosis—is generally an indication of an advancing periodontal disease; a routine cleaning can noticeably improve halitosis and freshen breath.
- A professional dental cleaning can remove unsightly stains from your teeth, giving it a healthier and brighter appearance.
How Often Should You Have Your Teeth Professionally Cleaned?
We recommend that our patients visit Hermann Park Smiles at least twice a year for routine professional cleaning as a preventative measure. However, if you have periodontitis, you should visit Dr. Sharel Sly every three to four months to prevent any further progression of the disease.
OTHER PREVENTATIVE TREATMENTS
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is often found in water sources such as oceans or rivers. When applied to the teeth, the fluoride is absorbed by the enamel—or outer layer of your teeth. The fluoride helps replenish lost calcium and phosphorous that keep your teeth strong; in our office, we use fluoride treatments to further strengthen your teeth against decay and cavities.
Dental sealants are another protective measure our office offers against cavities. Your teeth have small pits and fissures that even a toothbrush may have a hard time reaching and cleaning. As a result, bacteria and smaller food particles may become trapped in these grooves. Dental sealants are plastic coatings used to essentially “seal” these small pits and fissures and are further used to serve as a barrier against bacteria.
